We ask what driving looks like for you. Errands, or the interstate.
An honest answer about driving, and a plan for whatever is standing in the way. We assess the skills driving actually asks for, one-on-one with a licensed Occupational Therapist.
What It Is
Driving is the independence people grieve first and ask about last. Somebody in your house has been thinking about it for weeks. Nobody has said it at dinner. That silence is its own kind of exhausting, for the person who wants the keys and for the person holding them.
A pre-driving program takes the guessing out of it. We assess the pieces driving is built from: visual scanning, reaction time, attention when more than one thing is happening, judgment, memory for a route, strength and range of motion at the neck, shoulder, arm and hand. We measure them, we tell you what we found, and we build a plan for the gaps that can be trained.
Now the part that matters most. We assess and we advise. We do not license, clear, certify or restore anyone’s right to drive, because that authority is not ours to hand out, and there is no on-road test here. What you get is a structured look at the skills, a straight answer either way, and something concrete to take to your physician and your family.
We assess and advise. We do not license.
What It Helps
If any of these is the reason you are reading this page, you are in the right spot.
What A Session Looks Like
1
We ask what driving looks like for you. Errands, or the interstate.
2
We test the skills it takes, in the clinic, never in a car.
3
We tell you where you stand, and what we can work on.
Why It Works
A straight answer instead of a family argument.
The specific gaps, named out loud.
A plan for the ones we can train.
Something concrete to bring your physician.
Pairs Well With
Questions, Answered
The assessment comes first, and what follows depends entirely on what it turns up. If the gaps are trainable, you get a plan with an endpoint, not an open string of appointments: the four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent, with a clear job for each and a way to know you have earned the next one. One thing that never changes, whatever we find: we assess and we advise. We do not license, clear or certify anyone to drive.
Most of our patients arrive by physician referral, often from a neurologist, a physiatrist or a primary care office, and many insurance plans require one before they will pay. Since your physician is usually the person you will bring our findings back to, looping them in early tends to help anyway. Call us at (360) 989-1200 and we will tell you what your plan actually requires.
Very likely. The full payer list lives on our Insurance page and it is long: Regence BCBS, Medicare, Tricare, TriWest, auto insurance and Washington L&I are all on it. We verify your exact benefits before your first visit and tell you what we find, so the bill is not a surprise. Call (360) 989-1200 if you want us to start that today.
