What We Treat

Traumatic brain injury treatment in Vancouver, WA.

The store is too loud. The screen is too bright. The order of an ordinary task keeps sliding away. You work on all of it one-on-one with a licensed Occupational Therapist, every visit.

Sound Familiar?

Does any of this sound like your day?

  • The grocery store is too loud and too bright, so somebody else goes
  • You start the coffee and find the mug still empty an hour later
  • Two people talking at once and the whole room turns to static
  • A hand that fumbles buttons and zippers it used to handle without looking
  • You reread the same paragraph and it still refuses to land
  • Everyone keeps saying you look completely fine, which is somehow the worst part

Two or more? Keep reading.

Why It Happens

The injury was one moment. The wiring is the long part.

A brain injury does more than bruise tissue. It disrupts the connections that let separate parts of the brain talk to each other fast. Vision, balance, attention and memory all run on that speed. When it drops, an ordinary morning costs far more fuel than it used to, and the tank empties by lunch.

That is also why noise, light and crowds land so hard. Less is getting filtered out, so everything arrives at once. And it is why a hand can feel clumsy on a task even when strength tests fine, because timing and sequencing are separate jobs from strength. A cause-first evaluation pulls those apart: vision, balance, attention, fatigue, coordination. They do not respond to the same work.

The Honest Truth

A brain injury does not get quieter by being ignored.

If you keep waiting

  • The day keeps shrinking: fewer errands, fewer people, fewer hours of work
  • Avoiding light and noise entirely tends to shrink the tolerance, not build it
  • A weak or clumsy arm stays out of the day, and joints stiffen while nobody is looking

If you start this week

  • You leave visit one knowing what is vision, what is fatigue, what is attention
  • Light, noise and screens get worked in measured doses instead of only avoided
  • You get a plan with an endpoint, and a way to know you have earned the next phase

Nobody regrets starting too early. Looking fine on the outside was never a reason to keep waiting.

How We Treat It

The same four phases. Built for a healing brain.

Every plan has an endpoint. Here is what the four phases look like after a traumatic brain injury.

Starts visit one

Pain

Turn the volume down.

We find your ceiling for light, noise, screens and effort, then stay under it on purpose. A weak or painful arm gets positioned and protected before anything gets pushed.

Once we have a baseline

Prime

Build the tolerance back.

Vision, balance, attention and sequencing get worked in small graded doses. Where a hand will not open on its own yet, our therapists are Saebo Certified and have protocols for exactly that.

Once the basics hold

Perform

Put the real day back in.

Cooking, driving, screens, the store, the conversation about going back to work. Real tasks, graded up, with your therapist watching where it actually breaks down.

Reviewed as you go

Prevent

Make it hold on the hard days.

Strategies that still work when you are tired, a routine that fits a real week, and a written plan for the days that go sideways. That is the endpoint, not another appointment.

This was my first experience using occupational therapy services, and I have been truly impressed by the professionalism, compassion, and expertise of the team. I only wish I had known about these services years ago, as I believe my mother would have greatly benefited from occupational therapy after her stroke. After sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a motor vehicle accident, I’ve been working with my occupational therapist, and the support has made a meaningful difference in my recovery. They’ve helped me learn strategies to slow my brain down, manage daily tasks more effectively, and navigate the challenges of healing. I am incredibly grateful for the care and guidance I’ve received and highly recommend their services to anyone recovering from a brain injury or other life-changing event.

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking after a brain injury.

Most of our patients arrive by physician referral, and after a brain injury that is the usual route. What your own plan requires depends on your insurance, so call the clinic and we will help you sort out what is needed before your first visit. We check your benefits and tell you what we find. Paperwork should not be one more thing you have to hold in your head.

Tell us that when you call. Every visit here is one-on-one with a licensed Occupational Therapist, so the session is built around what you can tolerate that day rather than a group schedule. Managing light, noise and load is the Pain phase. It is the work, not something you have to push through in order to get to the work.

Nobody can hand you a number on day one, and we will not pretend otherwise. What you get instead is a plan with an endpoint. Your therapist maps the four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent, names what each phase has to accomplish, and reviews it with you as you go. You will always know which phase you are in and what is left.
