Sound Familiar?

Does this sound like your shoulder?

  • Reaching into the back seat and stopping halfway there
  • Rolling onto that side at night and waking straight up
  • Washing your hair mostly one-handed, because the other arm will not get up there
  • Putting a coat on the same sleeve first, every time, in the same careful order
  • Asking somebody else for the plate on the top shelf
  • A dull ache down the outside of the arm that never fully clocks out

Two or more? Keep reading.

Why It Happens

The shoulder is not one joint. It is a negotiation.

Your arm bone sits in a very shallow socket. It stays put because the rotator cuff holds it there, and it gets high because the shoulder blade slides underneath and makes room. Shoulder pain almost always means one of those parts stopped doing its share. An irritated cuff tendon. A capsule that tightened around the joint. A shoulder blade that stopped gliding, so the top of the arm bone crowds the space above it and complains every time you reach.

They feel similar and they need different work, which is why the stretches from the internet are a coin flip. Some of them load the exact pattern that caused the problem. A cause-first evaluation sorts out which part is the real one. You are the one who reaches, lifts and carries for everybody else. That arm is worth getting back properly.

The Honest Truth

A shoulder you stop moving gets stiffer.

If you keep waiting

  • The capsule tightens around a joint you stopped using, and tight capsule gives up slowly
  • Your shoulder blade learns a shrug pattern, and then your neck starts aching too
  • The other arm picks up double duty, wrist and elbow included, and starts asking questions

If you start this week

  • You find out which part is actually the problem: cuff, capsule or shoulder blade
  • Hands-on work in visit one, plus a sleep setup so the nights stop being the worst part
  • A plan with an endpoint: you always know which phase you are in and what is left

Nobody regrets starting too early. Motion is a lot easier to keep than it is to win back.

How We Fix It

Four phases. Built to get the reach back.

Every plan has an endpoint. Here is what the four phases look like for a painful shoulder.

Starts visit one

Pain

Get the ache down.

Hands-on work calms the irritated tissue, and we change how you sleep, dress and reach so the shoulder stops getting provoked all night.

Once the pain settles

Prime

Open the range back up.

Joint and soft tissue work gives back the motion the capsule and the shoulder blade have been quietly holding onto.

Once the motion holds

Perform

Make the arm dependable again.

Rotator cuff and shoulder blade strength, trained in the ranges you actually live in: overhead, behind you, out at the end of your reach.

Before discharge

Prevent

Keep it that way.

Lifting, reaching and carrying get retested under real load, and we fix the habits that crowded the joint. That is the endpoint, not another appointment.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Every visit had a relaxed atmosphere and they all worked diligently toward helping me reach my recovery goals.

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking for shoulder pain.

Both. Shoulder pain is one of the conditions we treat, and the shoulder sits on the same chain as the elbow, wrist and hand, so it is rarely a separate problem anyway. You work one-on-one with a licensed Occupational Therapist, several board-certified in hand therapy (CHT), every visit.

In most cases moving it is the treatment, and holding still is what lets a shoulder stiffen. We start in the Pain phase and calm the tissue down first. Then your therapist gives you the motion your shoulder is ready for and tells you which reaches to leave alone for now. If you are post-surgical, we follow the protocol your surgeon set.

How stiff the shoulder is and how long it has been that way both matter, so we answer this after the evaluation, not before. What you get either way is a plan with an endpoint. You will know which of the four phases you are in, Pain, Prime, Perform or Prevent, and what is left before you are done.
